Angels travel north with skeleton crew

The season in the DBBL has started and for the basketball fans of Noerdlingen there is nothing to complain about so far. Except for the defeat against the multiple champion from Keltern, the Eigner-Angels were able to win the past games and also in the cup they reached the next round. The commitment of the whole team pays off and in time for the return of the spectators in the Hermann-Kessler-Halle again basketball worth seeing is offered.

For the opponents from Lower Saxony, the season is not yet going quite as smoothly. After they were able to secure third place in the cup last year in addition to the vice championship, expectations for the new season are certainly high and the start leaves room for improvement. However, the GiroLive Panthers didn’t have an easy opening program either and after a win in Wasserburg, they lost clearly to the secret favorite Rheinland Lions. Only two days later, the Osnabrück team had to admit defeat to the strong Marburg women in the last second with only one point.

At least coach Ajtony Imreh certainly remembers some of the Osnabrück players. Samantha Fuehring and Jenny Strozyk performed excellently in both preseason games against the team from Noerdlingen and were top scorers for their team. Especially Fuehring, who is already playing her third season for Osnabrück, should always be in the focus of the players from Noerdlingen on Sunday, because besides being the top scorer she also grabs most of the rebounds for her team.

Not too much has changed in the Panthers‘ squad since last year. Since many players were re-signed, there are only three new additions. Especially the Slovenian Eva Rupnik, who previously made it to the top with the Rheinland Lions, as well as the rebounding strong US-American Jill Townsend shined recently with excellent performances and make it seem like they are just getting going.

Under normal conditions, it would therefore be difficult to determine a favorite for the match in advance. But after last weekend’s double-header, things are anything but normal in Noerdlingen. Reasons for concern are the reports from the medical department. Asha Thomas is back in training but still not ready to compete, while three other players had to call in sick after the Keltern game: Mariam Haslé-Lagemann with an ankle injury that will keep her out of the gym for at least another week. Elina Koskimies after an eye injury suffered in the last minute of the game and last but not least Meg Wilson due to after-effects of a blow to the head. The Canadian is currently in the hospital for observation with a concussion. Under these circumstances, Coach Imreh must be happy to have anyone at all sitting next to him on the bench while his „trunk five“ plays. The request to Osnabrück to postpone the game was answered in the negative. Sporting director Martin Fürleger commented on the situation: „We will play with the healthy players that are available to us. However, the guideline must be: not to risk any further injuries.“
